The Clean Industrial Deal – some progress made for European industries and environmental protection; yet, more actions needed
The long-awaited Clean Industrial Deal was published on 26 February, and FEDERREC welcomes a number of the proposals made, which include doubling the Circular Materials Use Rate from 12% to 24% by 2030!

While EuRIC and FEDERREC have been warning of the incoherence of European policies that reduce market outlets for recycled materials without boosting the demand for recycled raw materials (RRM) within the internal market, the European Commission has finally taken up the issue and listened to the industrial players.

Faced with massive imports of RRM within the EU, particularly from China, whose characteristics are often inconsistent with European environmental requirements, recycling companies are calling for swift measures that are consistent with the immediate threats they face and the absolute need to save European industry. If we want to protect the environment and ensure a sustainable industry, recycling and circular materials must be at the heart of decarbonisation and public policies must allow companies to have reliable and sustainable markets for RRM in Europe!

In particular, FEDERREC calls for prioritising circularity as a key driver of decarbonation in the provisions dealing lead markets and disqualifying any methodology which would go against circular materials and CO2 savings.
To meet the dual European challenge of environmental protection and industrial sovereignty, a clear policy restoring the competitiveness of European industries and boosting the demand for recycled materials and circular as well as low-carbon products is absolutely essential.
