BillerudKorsnäs has been awarded the Climate Prize as part of the supplier engagement initiative “Join us in protecting the planet”, driven by Tetra Pak.
For several decades we have been working on phasing out fossil fuels and reducing the environmental impact of our production units. Although our production today is 97 percent fossil-free, we will not stop there, we will continue our work. The target of becoming entirely independent of fossil fuels in the production process is clear. We have already come a very long way through the use of biofuels in production and we are constantly working to develop technology and more efficient working methods. In 2025, we plan to have our first mill with the possibility for an entirely fossil-free production process. In 2030, all integrated mills should reach the same fossil-free status. Our science-based targets are consistent with the reductions required to keep global warming to 1.5°C.
“Leading by example in fighting climate change“
Thanks to a long-standing ambition to phase out all fossil fuels in production processes, Tetra Pak recently awarded BillerudKorsnäs for having the most ambitious climate plan.
“We commit to making safe food available, everywhere. And we promise to do that in a way that protects what’s good: protecting food, people and the planet. In order to shape the future with secure and sustainable food systems, we are decarbonising the materials we use as well as the production processes, and the key ingredient for success here is collaboration. Our supply partner BillerudKorsnäs has achieved the lowest greenhouse gas emissions for the products provided to us and has submitted the most ambitious climate action plan, that is approved by the Science Based Targets initiative in line with a 1.5°C pathway. By doing this, they are one step ahead and this award recognises that they are leading by example in fighting climate change,” says Lars Holmquist, Executive Vice President for Sustainability & Communications at Tetra Pak.
How we contribute to a sustainable future
- Our fibre-based products replace alternatives with a higher climate footprint
We increase our customers’ opportunities to reduce their climate footprint by replacing material based on fossil plastic, aluminium and glass with our renewable packaging materials. Smart packaging solutions mean we also decrease the amount of air in packaging, enabling better use of the transport space, with lower emissions as a positive effect. - We manage a climate positive effect
BillerudKorsnäs operations and products contribute to a powerful and positive climate effect, estimated at 5.4 million tons of fossil carbon dioxide per year. This corresponds to the emissions of the entire steel industry in Sweden, or about one third of all domestic transport in Sweden. - Sustainable wood supply
The foundation for our business is sustainable forestry. An active forestry with good growth provides the best climate benefit and we procure large quantities of wood from sustainably managed forests in Sweden and other EU countries – forests that due to active management constitute major net sinks of carbon.
