SCA strengthens its position in renewable energy

SCA is continuing to strengthen its leading position in renewable energy. Our initiatives in this important area range from bio-based energy in various forms to wind energy produced on SCA land. Today, 20 per cent of Sweden’s installed wind power is located on SCA land in northern Sweden.

In addition to acting as a land owner for wind power companies, SCA also operates wind power in its own right. Our goal is to become self-sufficient in electricity for our industries and we have therefore acquired the Skogberget wind farm in Piteå municipality and have started construction of a new wind farm in Jämtland, also in northern Sweden. In order to achieve a high degree of self-sufficiency at the lowest possible risk, we have decided not to enter into any Power Purchase Agreements (PPA).

At the beginning of December, Biorefinery Östrand, a company jointly owned by SCA and Finnish energy company St1, achieved a key milestone in its pursuit of a more sustainable future. The company signed an innovation support agreement with the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA). The support is tied to a possible future investment decision regarding a biorefinery in Timrå for the production of renewable jet fuel and biofuel. It is estimated that the biorefinery will generate a climate benefit of almost nine million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents in its first 10 years of operation.

SCA and St1 have also reached another important breakthrough with a new biorefinery in Gothenburg. The facility has now completed its start-up phase in its ultimate goal of producing some 200,000 tonnes of renewable jet fuel and diesel a year from materials such as tall oil from SCA’s operations.
