Sappi Launches Arboro: Where Innovative Paper Manufacturing Meets Strategic Gameplay

For game publishers seeking excellent quality and sustainable performance, Sappi introduces Arboro, a board game that highlights the versatility of modern paper solutions. An original concept created by Sappi, Arboro was developed in partnership with board game specialists Game Brewer and produced by Cartamundi, one of the world’s largest playing card and board game manufacturers. Illustrated by French artist Jules Dubost, the game showcases how different paper qualities can harmonize to create an exceptional gaming experience.

Creating the Perfect Game

Each component of Arboro has been meticulously designed using specific paper qualities for optimal performance. The game box and game board feature Fusion Embossed papers that minimize light reflection while adding subtle depth to their design. The action cards utilize Algro Design Duo, which offers superior handling qualities and vibrant colors that maintain their impact even after multiple uses. The game’s paper currency, produced on Magno Matt, provides an ideal balance of durability and touch, while the Magno Volume paper of the rulebook ensures exceptional readability with a natural, uncoated finish.

Innovation for Sustainable Development

Arboro’s gameplay reflects its production philosophy, eliminating chance-based elements in favor of pure strategy. Players compete and cooperate to master sustainable paper production, managing forests, water resources, and energy production while meeting diverse customer demands. This immersive experience not only educates players on the dynamics of the paper industry but also demonstrates how thoughtful design and sustainable production can coexist.

“Game publishers are increasingly seeking sustainable production methods without compromising quality,” says Conor Evers, Head of Marketing at Sappi Europe. “With Arboro, we show how innovative paper solutions can enhance both the gaming experience and the environmental qualities of modern board games.”

Setting New Standards for the Industry

Beyond its role as a captivating strategy game, Arboro proves that sustainable game production can achieve superior quality through carefully selected papers. Each component presents specific technical advantages: fast ink drying, efficient processing, excellent lamination suitability, and consistent color reproduction across all elements. Created and manufactured locally in Europe, with all paper components FSC™ certified (FSC™ C015022), this game provides game publishers with a model for high-quality, sustainable production.
