EUDR: Cepi welcomes the outcome of the trilogues and calls for further work to ensure a smooth entry into application of the Regulation

The European pulp and paper industry welcomes the agreement reached yesterday by the Council, the Parliament, and the Commission to postpone by one year the entry into application of the EU Deforestation Regulation. Our commitment to sustainable forest management is centuries old and we share the goal of the EUDR to fight deforestation: we want forests to keep on growing and remain resilient, for future generations.

The one-year additional transition period will now allow for a better implementation of the Regulation. Without an adequate phase-in framework, the new Regulation would have risked considerable chain disruptions, with no tangible impacts on the root causes of deforestation.

We stress that more work is needed on the official EU FAQs and Guidance to the Regulation, in order to further clarify persisting ambiguities, solve potential inconsistencies and define operative solutions that are easily implementable by the operators, without compromising the integrity of the Regulation. We as an industry are ready to cooperate and provide our own contribution to this exercise.

We also call for the continuation and intensification of the training sessions on the Information System organised by European Commission to ensure that all actors across the supply chains receive the information they need to successfully implement the new requirements.
