DS SMITH invests €4.5 million in decarbonization and energy reduction at its CONTOIRE-HAMEL paper mill

Contoire-Hamel paper mill, with a capacity of 75,000 tonnes, has just completed major modernization work with the installation of an energy recovery system for its paper machine dedicated to the production of corrugated case material. This €4.5 million investment will enable substantial savings in energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

State-of-the-art technology serving the environment This system, which includes a new hood at the dryer and an energy recovery tower with three successive heat exchangers, will enable a minimum annual saving of 20% on gas consumption, equivalent to 28 GWh/year, the consumption of a paper mill. This also represents a reduction of CO2 emissions by 5,000 tonnes per year.

Modernization in the service of sustainability The tower will also recover approximately 140 m3 of condensate water per day, thus contributing to the preservation of water resources. “This project is part of our “Today and Tomorrow” sustainable development strategy and our decarbonization objectives to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. It complements previous initiatives undertaken on the site, such as our co-generation plant and our biogas boiler. This investment also contributes to the sustainability of the plant and the preservation of jobs,” said Matthieu Chateau, General Manager of the site.

A major project To carry out this project, the plant had to interrupt its activity from October 7 to 23 in order to replace the hoods and install the new tower. Up to 150 people, from various trades such as carpenters, electricians, mechanics, plumbers, insulators, and boilermakers, worked on the site 20 hours a day. This modernization represents a significant improvement in the economic and environmental performance of the Contoire-Hamel paper mill.
