Asia Pulp & Paper Wins Green Supply Chain Award for Second Consecutive Year

Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) Sinar Mas is pleased to announce that for the second year in a row, the company has won a Green Supply Chain Award from Supply & Demand Chain Executive. The Green Supply Chain Award recognizes companies making sustainability a core part of their supply chain strategy, and working to achieve measurable goals within their own operations and supply chains.

The 11th annual award program honors APP’s commitment to establishing a global industry with responsible supply chains; protecting forests, peatlands and biodiversity, in harmony with local communities.

APP’s approach to its operations incorporates the Circular Bio Economy, taking a clear step away from the take-make-waste approach to manufacturing and ensuring a sustainable closed loop system connecting the production process with the end user.

According to its 2018 sustainability reporting, APP has achieved significant sustainable milestone that impacts its entire range of products such as pulp, paper, tissue, and packaging. These achievements include:

  • Reducing the water intensity in production processes by 24%
  • Reducing the volume of solid waste dumped in landfills by 41%
  • Containing the impact of forest fires to just 0.07% of the concession
  • Reducing deforestation rate to 0.14% of protected land

Brands increasingly recognize the benefits of this approach, and APP is committed to producing products that help its customers create the same sustainable, circular structure. As part of a strategic partnership with Max Imports, Villa Chicken, a fast casual chain restaurant in Peru, is currently conducting a trial of APP’s biodegradable Foopak Bio Natura paperboard for its takeaway food packaging.

Incorporating biodegradable packaging like Foopak into its supply chain provides Villa Chicken with a sustainable packaging solution that reduces the use of single-use plastics while maintaining quality with a durable and grease-resistant alternative. Making this change away from plastics, they have also been able to customize takeaway box size options for different types of meals and reduce the total number of containers used with each order.

“APP takes a holistic approach to sustainability within its entire operation, and is committed to a long- term green supply chain through our Forest Conservation Policy,” said Elim Sritaba, APP’s Chief Sustainability Officer. “We strive to help our clients meet growing global consumer demand for sustainable paper products while working within the local communities where we operate to ensure a safe and sustainable supply chain.”

“Every year our Green Supply Chain Award recipients demonstrate what is achievable in supply chain sustainability,” says John R. Yuva, editor for Supply & Demand Chain Executive. “It is clear that while sustainability is not a new concept, there is always more we can accomplish.”

“We extend our congratulations to this year’s award recipients and their commitment to green initiatives,” adds Yuva. “The entries serve as best-in-class examples for other companies to model and create value for their supply chains.”
