Stenpa after Papeterie Saint-Michel, RDM Blendecques, Ahlstrom Bousbecques, Smurfit Kappa Alfa Avignon… For several months now, French paper manufacturers have been facing a series of site closures. After the liquidation, announced at the beginning of October, of Papeterie Saint-Michel, near Angoulême (Charente Department) which put an end to the production of some 75,000 t/year of Container Case Material (CCM) carried out by some 65 people, on November 8, Stenpa (formerly Ahlstrom Stenay, in the Meuse Department) was also placed in receivership. This factory, which was due to celebrate its centenary next year, employed 130 people. The mill manufactured woodfree specialty papers and coated papers (one and two sides) for applications in adhesive labels, graphics and the food industries.
In 2023, the site was sold by the Finnish Ahlstrom to the German investment fund Accursia Capital. But it was placed in receivership at the beginning of last July. “The former employees, supported by the unions and the local community, are determined to continue their actions in the legal field,” the CGT-FO inter-union indicated in a press release issued on November 8. They intend to hold the Ahlstrom and Accursia groups to account, so that they assume the human and social consequences of their common strategy for a closure.” The former employees also call on public authorities and economic players to mobilize to support the revitalization of the territory and offer new prospects to families affected by this closure.
