BillerudKorsnäs among the most sustainable companies in the world

As the only European company, BillerudKorsnäs last year was named sustainability leader in the category Containers & Packaging, and included in the globally recognized Dow Jones Sustainability Index. In this year’s assessment, BillerudKorsnäs advances from belonging to the top 20 percent in Europe, to the 10 percent most sustainable companies in the world.

Dow Jones Sustainability Europe Index covers the leading 20 percent of the largest European companies in terms of sustainability. Dow Jones World Index includes equivalent leading 10 percent of the companies worldwide. The fact that BillerudKorsnäs now is included in the World Index and once again named sustainability leader in it’s category is particular due to its performance within risk and crisis management, climate strategy and labor practice indicators.

"Being included among the most sustainable companies in the world is a great honour to us. Contributing to sustainable development is and will continue to be the starting point for our long-term strategy of profitable growth. Sustainability is therefore an integral part of everything we do. In a broader context, that means to always strive to take sustainability work a little further, to challenge conventional packaging solutions and working methods, and thereby positively contribute to a globally sustainable future", says Per Lindberg, President and CEO of BillerudKorsnäs.

BillerudKorsnäs sustainability work focuses on three areas : increasing customer value, responsibility throughout the value chain and contributing to a sustainable and bio-based society. In practice, that means to strengthen the customers sustainability work and competitiveness by developing smart packaging solutions based on renewable materials ; to speed up the transition towards a sustainable and bio-based society by combating climate change throughout the entire value chain locally and globally ; as well as to promote responsibility from raw material supply and production to recycling and provide engaging workplaces where safety, diversity and human rights are a priority.

Södra commences biofuel production

Södra will invest more than SEK 100 million in the production of biomethanol, a sustainable fuel from forest raw material. The project will commence in autumn 2017 and is scheduled to be ready for operation by spring 2019.

The aim is to produce 5,000 tonnes of biomethanol per year at the new facility to be situated at Södra’s pulp mill at Mönsterås. The long-term aim is to further increase production for passenger, truck and ship transport.

“More and more people are realising why we need to switch to fossil-free alternatives, but products must also move forward. We have access to the best and most renewable raw material available – forests. We also have the industrial expertise required for these types of complex and innovative products,” said Catrin Gustavsson, Senior Vice President of Innovation and New Business at Södra.

The biomethanol will be made from the crude methanol produced by the manufacturing process at Södra’s pulp mill. It will be part of the circular process that already exists at Södra’s mills, in which all parts of the forest raw material are used for the best possible effect. The first delivery will reach the market in spring 2019.

“If Sweden is to achieve the fossil-free climate targets, there must be viable alternatives to the fossil-fuel products that are currently available. This will be a major milestone in that development. It’s also in line with Södra’s own strategy to be totally fossil-free by 2030,” said Henrik Brodin, Business Developer for fuels at Södra.

RISE invests in new advanced X-ray equipment

The RISE Bioeconomy division has been delivered a SAXS & WAXS instrument, an advanced X-ray equipment that will be an important complement to the division’s existing analytical instruments. The new equipment can also be seen as a prelude to trials at the MAX IV synchrotron light system in Lund. With analyses from the SAXS & WAXS, the researchers get preliminary parameters for these trials.

Both research activities at RISE and other players have already shown great interest in using the equipment. Thanks to SAXS & WAXS, the possibilities to study structures and crystallinity in cellulose, for example, increases. This is particularly important for The Bioeconomy Research Programme 2018-2020.

"This technology will give us an even better picture of the molecular structure of cellulose in the cellulose-based materials we develop. I think it will also contribute to better processes for tailor-made pulps," says Tomas Larsson who is responsible for the SAXS & WAXS instrument at RISE Bioeconomy.

"We have already conducted a preliminary trial of regenerated cellulose from our own high-end specialty pulps. The technology seems promising and the instrument is easy to get started with," says Fernando Alvarado who is one of the first scientists to try the new X-ray equipment.

VForm: Maximum flexibility for Fourdrinier paper machines and hybrid formers

By individually setting the height and angle, VForm makes it possible to precisely adjust the activity of the pulp suspension. This increases the dewatering capacity and improves e.g. the strength of the paper. The optional integration in ComCore makes VForm a Papermaking 4.0 solution.

With the new VForm hydrofoils from Voith, papermakers can decisively improve the quality of all grades of paper already in the wire section. Unlike conventional dewatering systems the VForm allows the height and angle to be set for each individual hydrofoil. This increases the activity in the fiber suspension, which in turn leads also to a significant increase in the dewatering capacity.

Every VForm hydrofoil can be adjusted by up to five millimeters in height and up to seven degrees in the angle. This adjustment can be made manually. But in order to obtain a consistently high paper quality, the positioning of the hydrofoils needs to be adapted to the paper grade. For this reason, it makes sense to install an electric control system. The VForm foils can be adjusted for the specific grade using the Voith automation platform ComCore. Moreover, this also makes it possible to react to process fluctuations. The VForm is therefore another production solution from Voith that makes Papermaking 4.0 a reality – that is, the digitalization of paper production.

ENERGY SAVINGS and MACHINE SPEED INCREASE in CARTIERA DI MOMO (Italy): goals achieved with UniDryer® V3 and Air Bars Systems after coating stations

Cartiera di Momo produces recycled coated paperboard. Market demand for increased quantity and higher quality drove Cartiera di Momo to decide in late 2015 to replace the existing 30 years old Bekaert Solaronics infrared systems with the goals of increasing the machine speed, reducing the gas consumption as well as improving the quality.

Bekaert Solaronics supplied four gas infrared systems UniDryer® V3 followed by sets of air bars after each of the four coating stations. The Energy Recovery Concept was again applied to this project with the air bars sets directly fed by the exhaust hot air coming from the UniDryer® V3 systems. This TransRoll storage will be erected right after the PM’s in two phases middle of ongoing mill production. Existing manual clamp truck operated warehouses will be torn down to make space for the new automated TransRoll storage, a temporary storage will be erected adjacent to the existing warehouse, in order to maintain the storage capacity during the construction period. Phase 1 production start-up will be Q1/2019, and Phase 2 is planned to follow after that. Total storing volume after both phases has been commissioned will be 70,000 tons.

“The need for automated storage concepts in paper mills, both as intermediate roll storages between different production stages and as shipping distribution centers, is growing strongly. Simple reason for this is the industry’s shift from bulk production to more diversified production, and the need to respond to customer orders within days instead of weeks. Pesmel’s Material Flow concept offers perfect tool for this strategic change” says Kaj Fahllund, Vice President of Pesmel’s paper business.

ABB launches image-based online system for monitoring fiber properties to help control pulp mixture quality

ABB has launched L&W Fiber Online – a reliable, repeatable and cost-effective online system for measuring, monitoring and controlling significant fiber quality variables in paper stock preparation and pulp production. This helps pulp and paper customers to save production costs by optimizing fiber usage, as well as reducing energy consumption through elimination of over-refining, and to improve quality by generating uniform pulp furnish for the paper, board or tissue machine.
Compared with traditional indirect measurements such as Canadian Standard Freeness (CSF) and Schopper-Riegler (SR), the measurements based on fiber images provided by L&W Fiber Online provide a more detailed and accurate information on the status of pulp quality. Fiber properties are categorized and presented as mean values and statistical distributions of width, length, shape factor, two classes of fines (P and S) and macro fibrillation.
