Launch of Global Recycling Day website: new site showcases the Day’s mission to refocus the world’s awareness of recycling

The countdown has started to a new international awareness day taking place on 18 March 2018 which is dedicated to securing the future of the planet through recycling.

The initiative was officially kicked off at the Bureau of International Recycling’s (BIR) 2017 World Recycling Convention in New Delhi on 16 October 2017, with the switch-on of the Global Recycling Day website (globalrecyclingday.com) and launch of the Day’s social media channels Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn by Ranjit Baxi, President of the BIR – the global federation of the recycling industry.

The first ever Global Recycling Day will unite people across the world, highlighting the need to conserve our six primary resources (water, air, coal, oil, natural gas and minerals) and celebrating the power of the newly termed “Seventh Resource”- the goods we recycle every day. The new initiative is the brain child of Ranjit Baxi, who announced his vision for a day deciated to recycling at the inauguration of his Presidency at the BIR’s 2015 Dubai Convention.

Every year the Earth yields billions of tons of natural resources to create consumables. At some point, there could be nothing left. That is why the world must think again about what is thrown away – seeing not waste, but opportunity. This is the core message of the Day.

Global Recycling Day will be a day focused on action, aimed at a global approach towards recycling and calling on world leaders, international businesses, communities and individuals to make seven clear commitments in their approach to recycling.

Smurfit Kappa Mexico has invested US $62 million in a new machine which began operating recently in the Los Reyes Paper Mill, north of Mexico City.

The PM6 machine, which has a production capacity of 100,000 tons of recycled containerboard per year, will facilitate greater integration within the Group’s converting plants and significantly increase the energy efficiency of the Los Reyes plant.

The investment will enable Smurfit Kappa Mexico to produce high performance containerboard, contributing to the company’s competitiveness in an ever-growing packaging market. The type of material produced by PM6 further strengthens Smurfit Kappa’s offering for the agricultural and electrical appliance sectors, where protecting products in the supply chain is key.

PM6 is one of Smurfit Kappa´s largest investments in Mexico in recent years and an important milestone for the company. Investment in PM6, in addition to the US$33.2 million that has been already invested in the Mexican converting plant modernization project, demonstrates Smurfit Kappa’s long-term commitment to Mexico and consolidates SKG’s position as the leading supplier of paper-based packaging in the Americas.

Klabin supports sustainable practices through issue of green bonds abroad

Sustainability is in Klabin’s DNA, and to sustain its investments in these practices, the company recently (September 2017) raised funds in the international market through its first issue of green bonds amounting to around R$ 1.6 billion, maturing in 10 years. The company, which pioneered the adoption of sustainable practices, is a benchmark in sustainable development and its issue received the "High Standard" rating from consulting firm Sustainalytics. The offering drew significant investor interest, with demand exceeding the offer of green bonds sevenfold.

Sustainability governance at Klabin is strongly structured and functions on four key pillars : Sustainability Committee ; Sustainability Commission ; Sustainability and Communication Department ; and a working group on impacts of climate change, all with the mission to raise the level of transparency across the company and structure its actions.

Klabin has been, for three years, prominently featured in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), an international organization that analyzes companies’ efforts to minimize and manage the environmental impacts of their operations. In 2016, it was elected "Sustainable Company of the Year" and the most sustainable company in the paper and pulp sector by Guia Exame de Sustentabilidade. Moreover, since 2014, it has been included in the portfolios of the Corporate Sustainability Index (ISE) and Carbon Efficient Index (ICO2) of the São Paulo Stock Exchange (BM&FBovespa).

Södra’s port becomes fossil-fuel free

Södra’s port in Mönsterås will become completely free from fossil fuels in October. All work vehicles and cranes at the port will begin using HVO* diesel – a completely fossil-free alternative to standard diesel.

Södra’s port has four cranes and 16 working vehicles. Together, these handles about three million tonnes of freight each year. The freight is loaded for transport to Europe by land and sea and includes 430,000 tonnes of paper pulp and 170,000 m³ of sawn timber. This will now be carried out using only fossil-free HVO diesel.

“As a representative of a green industry, we consider this an obvious next step,” said Niclas Strömqvist, Site Manager at Södra’s port in Mönsterås.

The switchover at the port began in the spring of 2017 and was completed at the end of September. The move is part of Södra’s sustainability targets that aim to achieve fossil-free production by 2020 and fossil-free transportation by 2030 – targets adopted in 2016 and assigned the same status as Södra’s financial targets.

“Efforts have focused on examining and ensuring that the HVO diesel is compatible with existing equipment at the port. We are always on the lookout for climate-smart solutions. This is in line with how we want to act and operate as a company,” said Jörgen Erlandsson, Head of Technology, Environment and Quality at Södra’s port in Mönsterås.

HVO is both a climate-smart and economical alternative to synthetically produced petrodiesel. The raw materials for Södra’s HVO are slaughterhouse waste and rapeseed oil.

“HVO is a better environmental choice because it is 100-percent fossil-free. This means it is completely renewable and greenhouse gas emissions are substantially lower,” said Åsa Forss, Manager of Södra’s wood-chip truck fleet.

ABB to provide overall process control to SCA for the world’s most digitized mill

ABB recently won an order to supply comprehensive ABB Ability TM digital systems and solutions for SCA’s Östrand pulp mill expansion. The mill expansion is one of the largest investments in Swedish industrial history.

SCA is a leading forest products group, with headquarters in Sundsvall, Sweden. SCA started reconstructing the pulp mill in 2015, and the goal is for construction to be finished by June 2018. Upon completion, production capacity will double, and the production line for bleached softwood kraft pulp will be the largest in the world.

One automation system for the entire process

In 2016, ABB Ability System 800x was selected as the digital automation platform for the mill. This includes a fully integrated control and monitoring center that provides a complete process overview and the possibility to personalize ergonomics and work environments for each operator. In addition to integrated process control and power monitoring, ABB’s delivery to the Östrand project consists of transformers, motors, frequency converters and drive systems for large areas of the mill.
