Group CVB Ecologistics acquires paper mill in France

Group CVB Ecologistics has acquired the assets and activities of Papeterie de Raon, a paper mill in Raon L’Etape, France. The mill in Raon, established in 1880, has stopped production in March of this year after it went into receivership.

At the papermill an advanced stock preparation is available to process difficult recyclable grades of recovered paper of which amongst others milk cartons and comparable grades which are often coated both sides and also with foil. Processing these grades has been done already for over 4 decades and since 2010 also the plastic of the consumed liquid packaging is recycled and transformed into raw material which is used for the production of high quality plastic end products.

Restart of production in Raon is planned for the 2nd half of June with 30 experienced paper makers.

With this take-over CVB wants to offer a guaranteed circular solution for pre- and post-consumer liquid packaging. Until the end of last year the volumes of (production) waste liquid packaging supplied by CVB partners/suppliers were sold in China and to Raon. With new legislation for imports into China and the closure of Raon outlet of these difficult recyclable grades were at risk, reason to find for today’s and future suppliers a sustainable solution.

With this forward integration CVB will be able to close the (recycling)loop by using these difficult grades to produce bleached and unbleached packaging paper of 18 to 50 grams.

As part of group CVB Ecologistics the paper mill has been renamed to Raon Circular Regeneration (RCR in short).

R. Stanton Avery Pioneer Award goes to Alex Knott

Alex Knott, of the Dow Chemical Company, has been chosen as the recipient of the R. Stanton Avery Pioneer Award for the 2018 Label Industry Global Awards. Judging for the 15th annual awards program took place on 6 June during the recent FINAT European Label Forum (ELF) in Dublin, where the panel of international judges met to consider entries across four award categories.

Sponsored by Avery Dennison, the R. Stanton Avery Pioneer Award honors the contribution an individual has made which has really impacted the label and package printing sector, whether their pioneering work has spanned two years or two decades.

Knott is a senior scientist in the company and leader of a global team that has pioneered the latest innovations in pressure-sensitive silicone release liner coating technology, including the introduction of Dow’s Flat Release Systems. This technology has not only revolutionized high speed, low coating weight, high performance and labelstock release liner production, but has also been a key factor in helping to drive down silicone coating costs.

Knott started his career as a Development Chemist in 1987 in the pressure-sensitive industry at Dow Corning - today a wholly owned subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company. Since then he has held application engineering, technical leadership and senior scientist roles within this industry, and today has a solid global reputation as an authority on silicone pressure-sensitive systems.

Previous winners of the individual award include : Professor Tan of PEIAC, Tomas Rink of Ritrama, Helmut Schreiner of Schreiner Group, Suzanne Zaccone of GSI Technologies, and Neil McDonough of FlexCon.

During the same meeting, the judging panel also discussed at length and agreed the finalists for the three other categories. They are :

The Award for Innovation (for companies with more than 300 employees), sponsored by Flint Group Narrow Web (in alphabetical order) :

• Esko

• Fujifilm North America Corporation, Graphic Systems Division

• Paper Converting Machine Company

• Rotometrics

The Award for Innovation (for companies with up to 300 employees), sponsored by Flint Group Narrow Web (in alphabetical order) :

• Dienes Corporation

• Eaglewood Technologies

• Hamillroad Software

• MGI

• Phoseon Technology

The Award for Sustainability (in alphabetical order) :

• Avery Dennison

• Signode India Ltd

• UPM Speciality Papers

Mike Fairley, chair of the judges said : “As the highest accolade within the label and package printing industry, the quality of entries to the Label Industry Global Awards is always extremely high and drawing up the finalists is no easy process. However, the judging panel felt that Alex Knott was the stand-out choice for this year’s R. Stanton Avery Pioneer Award, with multiple recommendations from around the world.

“Alex is undoubtedly one of the most recognized global experts in silicone-based paper release coating technology, with exceptional in-depth knowledge of silicone coatings right through to the most advanced solventless Platinum systems. During his time at Dow, silicone coat weights have reduced from around two microns to one micron or less, Platinum levels have reduced from 100ppm to 50ppm or less, whilst at the same time coating speeds have risen from around 80 meters a minute up to 1,000 meters a minute or more.

“For the label converter and end-user, such innovations have contributed to superior waste stripping performance at ever-increasing press running speeds, as well as enabling much higher label application line speeds on the latest automated product decoration systems. The judges were unanimous in selecting Alex as the recipient of the R. Stanton Avery Pioneer Award 2018.

“We look forward to honoring him and the other winners in person at the awards ceremony in Chicago in September and to celebrating their successes.”

The other members of the judging panel for this year’s awards were : Chris Ellison, president of FINAT ; Dan Muenzer, chairman of TLMI ; James Quirk, group managing editor, Labels & Labeling ; Rosina Obermayer, editor of NarrowWebTech ; and Steve Katz, editor of Label & Narrow Web.

Voith - TerraSpeed Supreme: New thermal coating impresses at Hamburger Austria and Mondi

TerraSpeed roll coatings from Voith have been used successfully for many years. The product range now has a new addition – TerraSpeed Supreme, featuring new and impressive design parameters that give the coating outstanding performance values. TerraSpeed Supreme is already being used successfully in more than 15 installations worldwide.

The new functional coating of TerraSpeed Supreme ensures very stable roughness values and outstanding sheet release. Thanks to its improved coating structure, TerraSpeed Supreme minimizes web breaks and can reduce the open draws. In addition, TerraSpeed Supreme enables much longer roll service lives.

Improved operational reliability at Hamburger Austria
There are already more than 15 successful installations operating worldwide. Voith customers are impressed by the new coating and have already placed follow-up orders. One such customer is renowned corrugated base board manufacturer Hamburger Pitten. Josef Krenn, Operations Director and Markus Ungersböck, Head of Mechanical Maintenance at Hamburger Pitten in Austria explain the success story of TerraSpeed Supreme as follows : “At Hamburger Austria we produce a high-quality, diverse range of corrugating medium, packaging papers and plasterboard on our PM 4 in Pitten. The sophisticated use of different raw materials, auxiliaries and operating supplies imposes stringent requirements on the Nipco-P roll, the key position in the press section. Following the expansion of our range of paper grades, performance and doctoring using standard ceramic roll covers for this position became very unstable. A greater number of web breaks, and in some cases even sheet passing under the doctor blade, as well as premature roll changes to re-machine surfaces after relatively short periods of service, were suddenly day-to-day occurrences.”

Voith engineers also recognized the challenge and helped the customer to select the best coating in combination with suitable doctor blades, as Krenn and Ungersböck confirm : “Since we have been using the new TerraSpeed Supreme from Voith Paper operation has been absolutely reliable at this critical position. In combination with Voith’s SkyTerra S doctor blades, we have now been operating the unit for more than 2 years without interruptions and there has been no need to re-machine the roll surface. Web breaks originating from the Nipco-P roll have dropped significantly, sheet passing does not occur anymore and performance has been very stable over the entire operating time. The newly developed ceramic-coating TerraSpeed Supreme from Voith Paper has significantly improved our production but above all has made it operationally reliable again.”

Mondi impressed by TerraSpeed Supreme and SkyTerra S
Basically, the high wear resistance of Voith’s TerraSpeed Supreme enables continuous doctoring at maximum load. The SkyTerra S blade with negative facet was specially developed for use with TerraSpeed Supreme. But the successful use of TerraSpeed Supreme at Hamburger Pitten is not an isolated example. The Mondi production facility in Frantschach, Austria, has also had a similar experience. Andreas Petschenig, maintenance engineer at the Mondi paper mill in Frantschach, is also impressed by the premium coating : “In Frantschach we produce high-quality sack kraft paper grades on our PM 6 and PM 8. The sophisticated use of materials including chemical auxiliaries and operating supplies means that the press has to meet fairly exacting production engineering requirements. For example, following the installation of the shoe press at the PM 6 the doctoring on the ceramic covers of the shoe press counter roll became unreliable. A greater number of web breaks, sheet passing, and high web draws were almost part of the daily routine, as were roll changes to re-machine surfaces after relatively short periods in operation.”

Thanks to the new coating there has been a considerable improvement in performance at Mondi in Frantschach as well, as Petschenig reports : “All these problems have been solved since we started using TerraSpeed Supreme from Voith Paper. In combination with the Voith doctor blades SkyTerra and SkyTop, the cover service lives could be substantially increased. There is no more sheet passing and web draws could be reduced. The newly developed ceramic cover TerraSpeed Supreme from Voith has considerably simplified our production.” In the meantime, TerraSpeed Supreme has also been running successfully for a year in the shoe press of the PM 5 at Mondi Steti.

Now that numerous other Voith customers have had a similar positive experience with TerraSpeed Supreme. Taylor designed doctor blades like SkyTerra S and SkyTop S can even enhance that high performance level.

Sonoco Implementing Price Increases for Paperboard Tubes and Cores

Sonoco today announced it will increase prices for its paper-based tubes and cores by a minimum of 6 percent in the United States and Canada, effective with shipments beginning July 16, 2018.

“The price increase is necessary due to ongoing increases in uncoated recycled paperboard (URB), the largest input cost for tubes and cores. URB demand remains strong and the marketplace is extremely tight, with operating rates pushing 100 percent,” said Doug Schwartz, division vice president of sales and marketing. “In addition, the rising cost of transportation remains a headwind due to lack of capacity linked to recently imposed driver regulations. As a result, Sonoco will be implementing a new policy of selling certain large diameter tubes that have less space utilization yields at F.O.B. from our operations.”

International Paper And World Wildlife Fund Collaborate To Develop Science-Based Targets For Forests And Advance Forest Restoration In Brazil

Through a new collaboration between World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and International Paper, research will be undertaken to help answer the question of the quantity and quality of forestland needed for the planet to thrive. The outputs of this work will be used to help create the world’s first regional and global science-based targets for forests, as well as the first comprehensive set of guidance on actions that can be taken to sustain the world’s forests. Such ’forest positive’ actions include investing in responsible forest management, supporting forest conservation, restoring forestland, and raising awareness about the importance of forests with consumers.

"Our entire business depends on the sustainability of forests," said Sophie Beckham, IP Senior Manager of Natural Capital Stewardship. "We are excited to build on our participation in WWF’s Global Forest & Trade Network program through a significant and strategic initiative to advance conservation and restoration actions in forest ecosystems beyond our existing fiber supply chains."

In addition to delivering on the UN Sustainable Development Goals at the global level, the collaboration also will bring one local action to life—investing in a new ambitious restoration project in the Mogi Guaçu river basin of the Atlantic Forest of Brazil. IP has operations and is already investing in restoration in this region, work that will ideally inspire other organizations to invest in forest restoration in Brazil and beyond.

"IP’s investment and leadership will drive and deliver a better understanding of what forests need to stay well above their ecological tipping points," said Kerry Cesareo, vice president for forests at World Wildlife Fund. "Given the large scale and fast pace of forest loss and degradation globally, bold and inspiring actions like this within the private sector are needed to sustain forests."

Through this expanded collaboration, IP demonstrates that investing in the long-term sustainability of natural capital makes economic sense. As a company that transforms renewable resources into fiber-based products that people depend on every day, IP will continue to promote responsible forest stewardship, both within and beyond its supply chains, to ensure healthy and productive forest ecosystems for generations to come.

For the 5th edition of its annual reunion, the AFVP (Association Française des Vendeurs de Pâtes), currently chaired by Catherine Valet of Fibria/Suzano, has invited its members and clients to hold congress today in Divonne-les-Bains, near Geneva.
The present context of shortage on the global pulp market makes this kind of gathering even more important for suppliers and users, the latter being anxious to have a better visibility of the trends in price and capacities.
On that topic, the presentation of Pierre Bach, Research Manager at the consulting firm Hawkins Wright, is highly expected.
The recycled fiber is also a major concern. The French company PAPREC, leader in recycling solutions, will address the audience on that specific issue.
A networking session and a gala dinner in the beautiful gardens of Domaine de Divonne will close the event.

Lecta Commits to Solar Energy at Its Condat Le Lardin-Saint-Lazare mill

The new solar thermal power plant will be the largest in France.

In keeping with its commitment to the environment and increased energy efficiency, Lecta has announced an innovative renewable energy project to harness solar radiation for thermal power to be used in manufacturing processes at its Condat Le Lardin-Saint-Lazare mill.

With the help of an expert specialized in the installation of thermal power plants for the paper industry, starting this fall Lecta will have a thermal solar power plant at the mill with a capacity of 3.4 MWth. Its total surface area will be 1.4 hectares, with 45,434 square feet of solar panels deployed on the surrounding land and an ability to provide around 3,900 MW/year of energy. Panels with solar trackers, mechanical devices that orient the collectors, will follow the position of the sun during the day and convert the sun’s rays into thermal energy that will be sent to the mill as hot water.

Given the environmental benefits, including reduced gas consumption and CO2 emissions, as well as increasing the value of undeveloped land, job creation and, most importantly, promoting renewable energy in the New Aquitaine region with what will be the largest thermal solar power plant in France, the project has received the support of ADEME (French Agency for the Environment and Energy Management), which is financing 65% of the costs.

After the completion of the initial phase, which included its presentation to the local administration and securing the required licenses, the land is now being prepared for construction within the expected timeframe, with completion initially anticipated for September of this year.

With this project at its French mill, Lecta consolidates its position as an environmentally responsible company committed to solar energy as a sustainable, renewable resource, supporting its innovative use in manufacturing processes.

Valmet to introduce an Industrial Internet tracking solution for LNG, gas and chemical containers

Valmet introduces a new ATEX certified tracking solution integrated into the Valmet DNA automation system for LNG, gas and chemical containers. The ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU covers equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. Better container management through centralized data management is a valuable tool in improving safety and protecting the environment in ports.

The new tracking solution complements the Valmet DNA Integrated Operations application launched in February 2018. This Industrial Internet solution was developed in cooperation with Yepzon, a location device and service provider. The latest 5G technologies for the solution will be supplied by Qualcomm.

"The new solution utilizes Valmet’s and Yepzon’s latest technologies by integrating data from different processes with GPS tracking and other information from a tracking device. An easily traceable identity will be created for each container, and container location and status can be monitored online. Together with the Valmet DNA Integrated Operations solution, the device enables, for example, loading operations at terminals without expensive local systems," says Jani Hautaluoma, Director, Process Automation, Valmet.

Online location and sensor data improves logistics

The new ATEX certified 5G tracking solution will be part of Valmet’s service offering for container and data management linked with the Valmet DNA automation system. It provides the user with a continuous flow of accurate real-time location data and other sensor data, for example, about collision, temperature and air humidity. Its predictive features bring significant added value for logistics planning. In addition to cost benefits, the solution improves haulage protection and safety.

The solution has been developed on the basis of Valmet and Yepzon’s successful pilot project that showed a need for developing tracking solutions. To date, the industries have used traditional techniques such as RFID (radio frequency identification).

"This project developed together with Valmet creates a solid basis for expanding Yepzon’s services even further for the oil and gas markets and other industries," says Otto Linna, Founder of Yepzon.

Major Paper Companies Responsible for Climate Emissions & Deforestation - New Report

Office Depot, Penguin Random House and Japanese office supply giant Askul are among the companies called out for not living up to corporate promises in a new report released by Rainforest Action Network (RAN).

The pulp and paper industry is a significant driver of deforestation and climate emissions globally, and many major end-users of pulp and paper products have adopted corporate policies to cut out deforestation and human rights abuses in their supply chain. Still, RAN’s new report finds that, despite these promises, in many cases conditions on the ground show little change.

“Around the world, communities have lost and continue to lose their lands and forests to existing plantations and plantation expansion. Basic human rights are not being respected, intact forests are being felled, and carbon-rich peatlands are still burning,” said Brihannala Morgan, Senior Campaigner with Rainforest Action Network (RAN). “Companies are not meeting their promises, and the world’s forests and forest-dependent communities are suffering the consequences.”

RAN found that, while several companies are taking active steps to ensure that their policies are creating real change on the ground, many companies are moving slowly in turning their policy promises into real change on the ground.

Companies like Scholastic, LBrands, Macmillan and Hachette are leading the pack, while pulp and paper giants like Askul, Office Depot, and Penguin Random House need to take urgent action to show the marketplace that they are serious about their commitments. RAN used company surveys and reports to benchmark 13 key companies across several pulp and paper consumer sectors that have developed policies on pulp and paper sourcing.

Indonesia’s forests––with their globally significant biodiversity, importance for the climate, and consequence to local and Indigenous communities––have long been a focal point for global advocacy campaigns. Indonesia’s high deforestation rate, significant greenhouse gas emissions and human rights abuses are largely driven by the nation’s massive plantation sectors, including industrial pulpwood plantations.
