Klabin supports sustainable practices through issue of green bonds abroad

Sustainability is in Klabin’s DNA, and to sustain its investments in these practices, the company recently (September 2017) raised funds in the international market through its first issue of green bonds amounting to around R$ 1.6 billion, maturing in 10 years. The company, which pioneered the adoption of sustainable practices, is a benchmark in sustainable development and its issue received the "High Standard" rating from consulting firm Sustainalytics. The offering drew significant investor interest, with demand exceeding the offer of green bonds sevenfold.

Sustainability governance at Klabin is strongly structured and functions on four key pillars : Sustainability Committee ; Sustainability Commission ; Sustainability and Communication Department ; and a working group on impacts of climate change, all with the mission to raise the level of transparency across the company and structure its actions.

Klabin has been, for three years, prominently featured in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), an international organization that analyzes companies’ efforts to minimize and manage the environmental impacts of their operations. In 2016, it was elected "Sustainable Company of the Year" and the most sustainable company in the paper and pulp sector by Guia Exame de Sustentabilidade. Moreover, since 2014, it has been included in the portfolios of the Corporate Sustainability Index (ISE) and Carbon Efficient Index (ICO2) of the São Paulo Stock Exchange (BM&FBovespa).

Södra’s port becomes fossil-fuel free

Södra’s port in Mönsterås will become completely free from fossil fuels in October. All work vehicles and cranes at the port will begin using HVO* diesel – a completely fossil-free alternative to standard diesel.

Södra’s port has four cranes and 16 working vehicles. Together, these handles about three million tonnes of freight each year. The freight is loaded for transport to Europe by land and sea and includes 430,000 tonnes of paper pulp and 170,000 m³ of sawn timber. This will now be carried out using only fossil-free HVO diesel.

“As a representative of a green industry, we consider this an obvious next step,” said Niclas Strömqvist, Site Manager at Södra’s port in Mönsterås.

The switchover at the port began in the spring of 2017 and was completed at the end of September. The move is part of Södra’s sustainability targets that aim to achieve fossil-free production by 2020 and fossil-free transportation by 2030 – targets adopted in 2016 and assigned the same status as Södra’s financial targets.

“Efforts have focused on examining and ensuring that the HVO diesel is compatible with existing equipment at the port. We are always on the lookout for climate-smart solutions. This is in line with how we want to act and operate as a company,” said Jörgen Erlandsson, Head of Technology, Environment and Quality at Södra’s port in Mönsterås.

HVO is both a climate-smart and economical alternative to synthetically produced petrodiesel. The raw materials for Södra’s HVO are slaughterhouse waste and rapeseed oil.

“HVO is a better environmental choice because it is 100-percent fossil-free. This means it is completely renewable and greenhouse gas emissions are substantially lower,” said Åsa Forss, Manager of Södra’s wood-chip truck fleet.

Valmet's IQ Moisturizers start up and improve corrugated box quality at Dunapack Mosburger in Austria

The three Valmet IQ Moisturizers delivered to Dunapack Mosburger’s corrugated line in Strasswalchen, Austria, have been successfully started up. With the new solutions, the plant will be able to improve corrugated box quality and plant performance.

Since 2012-2013, Dunapack Packaging has invested more than EUR 30 million in its Mosburger Strasswalchen production site, including a new 2.8-meter-wide corrugated line.

"Higher quality, more diverse papers together with improved production and smaller, just-in-time orders make it more and more challenging to act against warp with standard temperature, speed and glue settings. We were looking for a device to do it. When Valmet presented its control technology that is widely proven in paper production, we were convinced that this will work on our corrugated line, too," says August Hauser, Corrugated Line Manager at Dunapack Mosburger Strasswalchen.

"Valmet’s IQ quality control solutions are established on paper machines worldwide. However, it takes innovative people to adopt them in the converting and corrugated industry, too. Innovation is definitely an attitude shown by the Dunapack Mosburger team," summarizes Christian Kallich, Country Manager, Austria and Eastern Europe, Automation, Valmet.

Technical information about Valmet IQ Moisturizer

The Valmet IQ Moisturizer profiler is used to correct all kinds of warping, decrease cracking tendency and optimize glue consumption by adding a fine and controlled water mist onto the liners with 60 mm or 120 mm resolution in a cross direction. IQ Moisturizer’s two-stage spray head contributes to a balanced and application-matched mixture of air and water. The system is used via an IQ Moisturizer operator interface and integrated into the existing process controls.

Valmet's polarized forming fabrics revolutionize water drainage in paper-making

Forming fabrics have an essential role in water drainage in the wire section of a paper machine. By introducing the new generation’s polarized forming fabrics, Valmet revolutionized water drainage in the wire section.

"Our polarized forming fabrics have been piloted in paper-machines for over a year now. After the polarized technology entered the market in 2016, we have seen its advantages through our customers’ performance. The machines run cleaner, number of breaks is reduced, retention is higher, just to mention a few. The unique polarized structure makes a big difference in the fabric performance compared to what we have seen before," says Pekka Kortelainen, Product Technology Manager at Valmet.

Polarized structure improves the machine runnability and performance

Traditionally, all SSB (sheet support binding) fabrics have had direct drainage channels. In the polarized structure, the machine direction yarns on both the paper side and the roll side are shifted to form an off-stacked structure. This special structure removes the direct drainage channels traditionally used in forming fabrics.

"The unique polarized structure allows controlled initial drainage in the paper-making process. That improves retention and helps keeping the machine clean. Good runnability and cleanliness reduce breaks and therefore increase production capacity remarkably. Cost-savings are created by for example being able to use less chemicals," explains Kortelainen.

International Paper to Convert Riverdale Paper Machine

International Paper today announced plans to invest approximately $300 million to convert its No. 15 paper machine at the Riverdale Mill in Selma, Ala. from uncoated freesheet to high quality whitetop linerboard and containerboard. The conversion is targeted to be completed by mid-year 2019. The investment will add 450,000 tons of annual capacity, with flexibility to shift between containerboard products.

Converting Riverdale No. 15 will position International Paper to grow its Industrial Packaging business, continue to provide attractive jobs to Riverdale team members and remain a significant supplier of uncoated freesheet in North America.

"Our customers expect us to support their growth and this machine conversion will meet their needs," said Tim Nicholls, IP’s senior vice president, Industrial Packaging the Americas. "Our Industrial Packaging business continues to focus on our customers in strategic channels including our box business, domestic and export containerboard and specialty grades."

Nicholls added its Industrial Packaging mill system allows the business to optimize product mix, increase service and reduce costs. "Our system runs most effectively when there is flexibility, and this conversion will also help us define a more streamlined and balanced system overall."

As a result of the machine conversion, the company will reduce its annual uncoated freesheet capacity by 235,000 tons. The remaining machine at the Riverdale Mill will continue to produce uncoated imaging paper products.

"International Paper’s uncoated freesheet business remains a strategic part of the company and we are well positioned to support current and future customer demand," said Mike Amick, Jr., IP’s senior vice president, Paper the Americas & India. "This investment proactively repositions Riverdale No. 15 to serve our growing packaging business, while enabling us to optimize our North American Papers business."

BillerudKorsnäs cartonboard facilitated three winning entries in the prestigious European Carton Excellence Award 2017

Cartonboard material from BillerudKorsnäs, a leading global provider of sustainable packaging materials and solutions, has been used in three winning categories at the prestigious European Carton Excellence Awards, including the most prestigious “Carton of the Year”.

On September 21, 2017, the 21stedition of the European Carton Excellence Award, Europe’s most renowned award for carton packaging, was held and BillerudKorsnäs and their converter and brand owner partners went home with three prestigious awards.

“It’s a great honor to be part of and being able to help our customers, both converters and brand owners, with realizing all their great visions, design and environmental packaging ideas. At BillerudKorsnäs we have developed a series of materials creating no need for compromises. Our cartonboard is made from primary fibers, making it so strong that the packaging weight can be reduced without compromising performance, making it possible for both beautiful, functional and environmental packages.” says Magnus Levinsson, Business Segment Director Cartonboard at BillerudKorsnäs.

Together with Domenis 1898 SRL and Lucaprint, BillerudKorsnäs won the most reputable award “Carton of the Year” with the entry Geometrie Cividât. The classic gin is elegantly presented in a diagonally cut carton, where the round bottle is perfectly secured inside the functional and attractive design, making it stand out and at the same time enhance the sophisticated quality of the product. The superior quality and printability of BillerudKorsnäs cartonboard made sure that the cartons designer, Ufficio Tecnico Lucaprint and Giulia Toscanelli, could realize their vision which in the end resulted in being crowned the best carton of the year.

BillerudKorsnäs also helped liquorish manufacturer LIQ and producer VG Kvadra Pak JSC to win best packaging in the “Confectionary” category with their prgifemium packaging “LIQ gift set”. The t set consists of one large gift box which holds four small cube boxes, all made from BillerudKorsnäs cartonboard. The small boxes have a double layer of material produced from eco-friendly cartonboard material, which helps to achieve a more natural and matte look and at the same time allows for excellent printing quality and what the jury named “an exceptional experience”.

First place in the “Drinks” category went to the French Jolival together with VG Angoulème who designed and produced the entry ‘Eco-Fontaine Jolival’, a transportable five-litre water fountain that requires no maintenance or electricity. Made of BillerudKorsnäs cartonboard the carton can be recycled or refilled and therefore has multiple lifecycles, an extremely eco-friendly concept. The use of cartonboard for both cups and dispenser also helps to limit the use of plastics, doubling the positive environmental, which the jury called “ideal”.
